Waiting for Pompano

Report Date: February 1, 2014

Everyone's waiting on the Treasure Coast for the pompano bite to turn on. We have seen a few in the crossroads, hells gate and around the Stuart Causeway but the pompano so far have been scattered at best. Also mixed in at the Stuart Causeway have been a few black drum, mangrove snapper and spanish mackerel. Speaking of the mackerel, I finally made it outside just south of the inlet playing with the macs. The bite was slow unless you anchored and chummed them up with glass minnows. Also mixed in were sheepshead to four pounds and some snappers.

Yesterday the front pushed through and fishing should really pick up the next couple of days. I have heard reports of flounder north of the power plant and plan on fishing there Friday.

Looking forward to the pompano bite in February and March. Have seen scattered action for them so far with the best spots around hells gate and the crossroads. Mackerel are stacked up just outside the inlet but bring some glass minnows to chum them up. On the structures, sheepshead to 4 pounds with mangrove snapper and a few black drum.
