Avoid the Dark Water

Report Date: March 4, 2016

First, I would like to address the water discharges from Lake Okeechobee. The St. Lucie River is getting hammered from these releases. During this period, I avoid the St. Lucie River all together and either target incoming tide around the inlet where clean ocean water is present or fish north around the power plant where you are dealing with Fort Pierce Inlet tides with cleaner water. My third option this time of year is running outside on calm days for mackerel.

The St. Lucie Inlet area on incoming tide has been producing some great fishing with jacks, pompano, sheepshead, snapper, snook, goliath grouper, black margates, black drum and around ten other species. This area is very fishable until about the second hour of outgoing when you start to see the dark water.
